Inspired By: Eclecticism
The neutral, grey-washed farmhouse trend favored by bloggers and social media users everywhere has had its months (years!) in the spotlight. Sure, there is something to be said for a crisp, cool-toned dove grey palette that serves as a neutral canvas for art, furniture, décor, plants, you name it. But what if we stepped back and considered how vibrant color, quirky pattern play, and a vintage-esque layered look can bring aesthetic drama while also successfully serving as a backdrop canvas in interior spaces and at events.
Eclectic (adj) is defined by Merriam-Webster as composed of elements drawn from various sources; consisting of many things of different sorts. Perhaps we can think of eclectic style as somewhat of a catch-all category that describes an interior aesthetic that doesn’t fit into one specific style box. In other words, eclectic design bridges the boundaries and breaks the mold of established styles with a specific aesthetic such as midcentury modern, rustic, minimalist, scandi, cottagecore, etc. Incorporating elements reflective of personal taste and preference gives us a lot of freedom to simply, well, create!
Sure, eclectic can essentially translate to “a little bit of this, and a little bit of that,” but you may be thinking to yourself, surely there are some characteristics that generally sum up the eclectic aesthetic. And, you’re right! Below are my top three.
Pattern, texture, and color play: Eclecticism is tactile and composed of strata made up of different patterns, textures, and colors that all somehow achieve a harmonious balance. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, play with colors that feel like an exciting mix, and select unconventional upholstery that stands out.
Incorporation of antiques, vintage elements, and found objects: A unique vintage find or antique object cannot be replicated. The history, the patina, the mysterious backstory that we may never know. Incorporating antiques, vintage elements, and found objects into an eclectic space gives it a unique, one-of-a-kind aesthetic with a story to tell.
Layering (and don’t try too hard): At it’s core, eclecticism is about personal style and preference. So please pile on layers of treasures, art, textiles, plants, to your hearts content in a way that feels organic to you! Experiment until you hit a note that makes your space feel like your home.
